Your Child’s First Visit
Your child will be introduced to the dental examination environment in a fun and interactive way. We will show them how the chair works, introduce them to the main tools we will be using, and hopefully count their teeth. This allows them to meet our team and feel comfortable while Dr. Proulx conducts a basic exam.
First cleanings generally occur between 2-3 years of age. At this time, we will conduct another exam and do a basic polish. Toward the end of your appointment, your child will be offered a fluoride varnish treatment. Fluoride treatments work to prevent cavities with maximum efficiency in childhood as this is when enamel is developing. We utilize a specific varnish to minimize the time your child should wait before eating or drinking and to make sure it doesn’t feel sticky. Our goal is to make every aspect of your visit fun and pleasant!
First x-rays usually occur between 4-6 years of age (depending on your child’s comfort level and risk level). These images are used to assess potential cavities between tooth surfaces which are not visible during a visual exam and to assess incoming molars.

We recommend scheduling your child’s first dental visit by their first birthday or when their first tooth appears, whichever comes first. Our goal is to ensure that your child grows up loving the dentist. We are happy to get them in the chair a few times prior to their first cleaning.

Our office was designed with the needs of young children in mind. Our waiting room is full of interactive play opportunities and each operatory is equipped with TV ceilings to distract your child (if needed/desired).
